Conference to Examine Role of Mayor in Times of Crisis

Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes is one of nine U.S. mayors traveling to Israel May 8 for the 22nd Annual Jerusalem Conference of Mayors. Hosted by Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, the week-long event is co-sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Jewish Congress, which covers the costs of the mayor' participation, and is conducted in cooperation with the Israeli Foreign Ministry.


In Jerusalem , the U.S. delegation will be joined by approximately 20 mayors from cities in more than 15 countries in South and Central America , Europe and Africa . The theme of this year'conference is "The Role of the Mayor in Times of Crisis."


The mayors attending the conference are scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as well as Industry, Trade and Employment Minister Ehud Olmert, and will participate in several sessions in which Mayor Lupolianski will discuss current issues affecting Jerusalem . The mayors will also meet with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer.


Conference sessions will focus on a variety of municipal issues in Israel and the visiting mayors will have several opportunities to discuss their cities and the strategies they employ to address local problems. Included in the conference are visits to the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center to meet with the head of the trauma unit and to the Israeli Defense Force's Home Front Command to view a live exhibition of integrated first response. The mayors will tour both historic and modern sites in Jerusalem , and travel to the Sea of Galilee , the Jordan Valley , the Golan Heights and the Dead Sea .


The U.S. delegation also includes Mayors James Garner of Hempstead, NY; Jane Campbell of Cleveland, OH; Cristina Cruz Madrid of Azusa, CA; Rosemarie Ives of Redmond, WA; Charles Tooley of Billings, MT; David Wallace of Sugar Land, TX; and Shelia Young of San Leandro, CA; and County Executive Joseph Griffo of Oneida County, NY.
