Englewood 's ubiquitous mayor, the Honorable Michael J. Wildes recently took time out of his super busy schedule to visit, once again, with the students of Dwight Morrow High School . This time it was as the guest speaker for the AVID educational program under the able direction of foreign language instructor, Ms. Maria Iglesias. The highly successful AVID program, an acronym for advancement via individual determination, is designed to help middle and high school students prepare for and succeed in colleges and universities. Students in the program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for college. The AVID program offers a rigorous program of instruction in academic “survival skills” and college level entry skills. Students are taught how to study, read for content, take notes and manage time. Students also participate in collaborative study groups or tutorials in order to reach higher levels of understanding. Each Friday, a successful member of the business and professional community visits Dwight Morrow High School to share their leadership experience and encourage students to pursue their dreams. Last week, Mayor Wildes enthralled the audience with a positive and enthusiastic presentation that certainly motivated students to reach full potential in their personal, academic, and professional lives. Mayor Wildes told the students to “pursue a profession that will make you want to wake up at five o'clock in the morning.” Mayor Wildes also stresses the need to establish good ethics and routines in life. He believes a simple rule at his law firm that accounts for much success, is the practice of returning all phone calls to his office by the end of the same day. Many questions emanated from Ms. Iglesias' AVID class members.
In addition, we at Dwight Morrow High School are grateful to Mayor Wildes for recently bringing his client Kwame James to the Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium to address the entire student body. Mr. James is responsible for saving 197 passengers on American Airlines flight 63 by subduing terrorist Richard Reid, the man responsible for trying to detonate a shoe bomb on board the aircraft. Mayor Wildes has successfully represented Mr. James in his attempt to obtain full immigration rights in the United States of America . Thanks to Mayor Wildes for going above and beyond the call of duty on behalf of the entire Dwight Morrow High School community. We also thank Mr. Isiah Jefferson, CEO of Circles of Color for his assistance with the AVID program. In addition to attending all AVID events, Mr. Jefferson has freely given his time by arranging an impressive list of guest speakers throughout the school year.
